Scott Olsen not throwing well for the Florida Marlins despite his record

Blogged under Front Page, Pitching BP, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Thursday 19 April 2007 at 10:46 pm

Scott Olsen has started 3 games so far this season and he’s 2-1 with a 6.92 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP.  In 13 innings this season, Olsen has allowed 12 hits, 10 earned runs and he’s walked 12 batters.  Olsen has good stuff, he just needs to throw more strikes and he will be fine.

The Florida Marlins place two players on the DL

The Marlins have placed both Alejandro De Aza and Jorge Julio on the 15-day disabled list.  De Aza has a sprained ankle and will probably only be out a couple weeks.  In 9 games this season, De Aza is 10 for 33 (.303 avg, .770 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 3 RBIs and a stolen base.  Eric Reed has been called up from the minors to take De Aza’s spot on the roster.  Reed was only 6 for 46 (.130 avg) in AAA ball, so look for the Marlins to use him only as a pinch runner and defensive replacement until De Aza returns.  Cody Ross and Alfredo Amezaga will probably split time in CF for the time being.

Jorge Julio has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain.  Julio has been horrible so far this season as he’s pitched in 7 games and has an 0-2 record with a 19.06 ERA and a 4.59 WHIP!  In 5.2 innings so far this season, Julio has allowed 15 hits, 12 earned runs and has walked 11 batters.  Look for the Marlins to send Julio to the minors on a rehab assignment when he finally gets healthy.  Lee Gardner has been called up to replace him in the bullpen.

The Florida Marlins week doesn’t go as well as the first one did

The Florida Marlins went 2-3 last week as they outscored their opponents 24-23.  They really needed to save a couple of runs from their wins and used them in their losses, as it might have netted them another win or two…but that’s not the way baseball works.  The Marlins are now in third place with a 6-5 record, 2 games behind the Atlanta Braves.

Henry Owens looking like the possible closer for the Florida Marlins

With Jorge Julio blowing up so far this season, Henry Owens has slid into the closer’s role for the time being.  If he keeps pitching like he is right now he will probably get to keep the job fulltime.  Owens has a save, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP so far this season.  Owens has only allowed 2 hits in his first 7 innings of the season which is remarkable.  The Marlins really hope Owens can keep this up as he would fill one of their biggest holes coming into the season.

The Florida Marlins place Ricky Nolasco on the DL

Blogged under Front Page, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Wednesday 11 April 2007 at 9:23 pm

Ricky Nolasco was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a tender right elbow.  He had pitched in relief one time this season and he threw 1.1 innings and allowed 3 hits and 3 earned runs.  Nolasco was supposed to start on Tuesday but the Marlins called up Rich Vanden Hurk to take his spot in the rotation.  Vanden Hurk pitched pretty well as he threw 4.2 innings and allowed 5 hits, 1 earned run, walked 3 batters and struck out 5 before the rain came.
