The Florida Marlins have a tough week

The Florida Marlins were 2-4 last week as they were outscored 34-25.  The Marlins pitching did them in last week as they were pretty bad.  The Marlins entered this week with a 23-27 record which had them in 4th place in the National League East, 9.5 games behind the Mets.

#1 prospect Chris Volstad is having a rough time in the minors for the Marlins

Baseball America has Chris Volstad ranked as the Marlins #1 prospect in their system, but he’s having a rough time in Hi-A ball.  In 10 games (9 starts) the righty is 3-5 with a 5.24 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP so far.  In 55 innings, Volstad has allowed 72 hits, walked 16 batters and whiffed 37.  The Marlins are going to bring Volstad along slowly, only promoting him if he deserves it.

Kevin Gregg has been outstanding so far this season for the Florida Marlins

Kevin Gregg has been outstanding all season long for the Marlins.  In fact, he has replaced injured Henry Owens as the Marlins’ closer for right now.  In 22 games this season, Gregg is 0-1 with 4 saves, a 2.33 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP so far this season.  In 27 innings, he has allowed 17 hits, bit 5 batters, walked 11 and whiffed 27 batters.  Manager Fredi Gonzalez has said that Gregg will be the closer for the Marlins as long as he continues to pitch well.

Taylor Tankersley is not looking too good this season for the Florida Marlins

Taylor Tankersley pitched really well last season, but he doesn’t look too good this year so far.  In 16 games, Tankersley is 3-1 with a 5.68 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP so far this season.  In 12.2 innings, he has allowed 11 hits, 3 homers, walked 6 batters and whiffed 8.  The Marlins need Tankersley to pitch well like he did last season for them.

The Marlins were 5-2 last week as they outscored their opponents 34-29.  The Marlins bats came alive and that was the reason for the nice record last week.  The Marlins entered this week with a 21-23 record which has them in 4th place in the National League East, 7.5 games behind the Mets.
