Gibbons has now played in 779 games in his major league career and he is 724 for 2,787 (.260 avg, .767 OPS) with 348 runs scored, 121 homers and 405 RBIs. Gibbons will have a shot to be the Marlins’ #4 outfielder this season as long as he stays off the juice.

The Marlins have signed 32-year old righty reliever Scott Proctor to a 1-year, $750,000 contract. He pitched in 41 games (0 starts) for the Dodgers last season and he was 2-0 with a 6.05 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. Proctor has now pitched in 262 games (1 start) in his major league career and he is 16-10 with 1 save, a 4.42 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. At least the Marlins have finally signed a legit major league free agent this off season. Proctor should help out the bullpen for the Marlins as he has a strong arm and has been durable in the past.

The Florida Marlins sign Mike Wood

The Marlins have signed 28-year old righty Mike Wood to a minor league contract. Wood pitched in 26 games (all starts) in Japan last year and he was 3-12 with a 4.69 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Wood has also pitched in 115 games (39 starts) in his major league career and he is 16-22 with 2 saves, a 5.49 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. Wood will be hard pressed to make the Marlins pitching staff at any point of the 2009 season.

The Florida Marlins sign Brian Sanches

The Marlins have signed 30-year old righty reliever Brian Sanches to a minor league contract. He pitched in 12 games (0 starts) for the Nationals last season and he was 2-0 with a 7.36 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP. Sanches has now pitched in 42 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 3-1 with a 6.13 ERA and a 1.74 WHIP. This was just another example of how cheap the Marlins are as Sanches will likely only get the major league minimum if he makes the pitching staff in 2009.
