The Florida Marlins DFA Dan Meyer

The Marlins have designated 28-year old lefty reliever Dan Meyer for assignment and he deserved it. Meyer pitched in 12 games (0 starts) for the Marlins this year and he was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA and a 3.12 WHIP. He gave up 15 hits and walked 11 batters in only 8 1/3 innings for the Marlins this year. He pitched in 83 games (0 starts) for the Marlins in his two years with them and he is 3-3 with 2 saves, a 4.05 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. The Marlins have recalled 32-year old righty reliever/starter Jorge Sosa to replace Meyer in the pen. Sosa has pitched in 8 games (7 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he is 4-1 with a 3.78 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. He has pitched in 272 games (88 starts) in his major league career in which he is 42-50 with 7 saves, a 4.72 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. The Marlins would likely want to keep Meyer if he clears waivers but some team might claim him because he’s a lefty.

UPDATE: (6/1/2010) - Meyer has cleared waivers and accepted a minor league assignment to stay with the Marlins.

The Florida Marlins send a couple of players to the minors

24-year old lefty swinging outfielder Bryan Petersen and 27-year old righty reliever Burke Badenhop have been sent to AAA. Petersen has played in 12 games for the Marlins this year and he is 1 of 16 (.063 avg, .180 OPS) with 1 run scored. He just wasn’t getting enough P.T. to warrant keeping him in the majors. Badenhop earned his way back to the minors. He has pitched in 15 games (0 starts) for the Marlins this year and he is 0-5 with 1 save, a 6.43 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. The Marlins have recalled 34-year old lefty swinging 1B/3B Mike Lamb and 26-year old righty reliever Jay Buente from AAA to replace Petersen and Badenhop. Lamb has already played in 19 games for the Marlins this year and he is 4 of 18 (.222 avg, .541 OPS) with 1 run scored and 3 RBIs. Buente will be getting his first taste of the majors. He has pitched in 19 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he is 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He has whiffed 35 batters in only 26 2/3 innings in the minors but he has 17 walks. The Marlins hope that they can get Buente to tighten up his control a bit as he has good enough stuff to succeed in the majors. Buente has now pitched in 174 games (3 starts) in his five years in the minors and he is 17-9 with 6 saves, a 3.19 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP.

The Florida Marlins place Renyel Pinto on the D.L.

The Marlins have placed Renyel Pinto on the 15-day disabled list with left hip soreness. Pinto has pitched in 19 games (0 starts) for the Marlins this year and he is 0-0 with a 2.30 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. The Marlins have recalled 27-year old lefty reliever Taylor Tankersley to replace Pinto in the bullpen. Tankersley has pitched in 20 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he is 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. He missed all of the 2009 season as he was recovering from major surgery. He last pitched with the Marlins in 2008. Tankersley has pitched in 141 games (0 starts) in three years with the Marlins and he is 8-3 with 4 saves, a 4.25 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP.

The Florida Marlins need a LF or CF

Cameron Maybin looks overmatched and Chris Coghlan is looking like the pitchers have figured him out. With that in mind the Marlins should be calling the Royals about David DeJesus. I think the Royals would definitely trade DeJesus and cash to the Marlins for Renyel Pinto and Bryan Petersen. This is a trade the Marlins would have to make because they need to start getting some production out of the top of the lineup which is where DeJesus would bat (1st or 2nd). Maybin is clearly overmatched right now both at the plate and in the field as he looks like he needs more time in AAA.

Josh Johnson has been electric for the Florida Marlins this season

Blogged under General, Front Page, Throwing Well, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Friday 21 May 2010 at 5:19 pm

26-year old righty starting pitcher Josh Johnson is rewarding the Marlins for his long term contract he got over the winter. Johnson has started 9 games for the Marlins this season and he is 4-1 with a 2.68 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He has only given up 39 hits in 57 innings pitched this season while whiffing 63 batters showing just how nasty his stuff has been this year. Johnson has turned himself into a true staff ace and he will continue to be just that as long as he can stay healthy which has been a problem earlier in his career.
