The Marlins have acquired 32-year old lefty reliever Will Ohman from the Orioles for 25-year old righty starting pitcher Rick VandenHurk. Ohman has pitched in 51 games (0 starts) for the Orioles this year and he is 0-0 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. He has now pitched in 375 games (0 starts) in 8 years in the majors and he is 11-9 with 3 saves, a 4.14 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Rick VandenHurk pitched in 2 games (0 starts) for the Marlins this year and he was 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA and a 3.00 WHIP. VandenHurk pitched in 35 games (32 starts) in his four years with the Marlins and he was 8-9 with a 5.96 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. This was a good trade for the Marlins as it was a move made with the idea of making a run for the playoffs.

The Marlins have recalled 30-year old righty swinging IF/OF Hector Luna. Luna has played in 97 games in AAA-ball this season and he is 104 of 354 (.294 avg, .845 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 16 homers, 71 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Luna last played in the majors in 2008 with the Blue Jays. He has played in 284 games in his five years in the majors and he is 190 of 703 (.270 avg, .713 OPS) with 97 runs scored, 11 homers, 82 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. He deserved to get called up by the Marlins earlier this season so look for him to try to make up for lost time.

The Marlins have traded 28-year old righty swinging 1B/3B Jorge Cantu to the Rangers for 24-year old righty reliever Evan Reed and 22-year old righty starting pitcher Omar Poveda. Cantu played in 97 games for the Marlins this season and he was 98 of 374 (.262 avg, .719 OPS) with 41 runs scored, 10 homers and 54 RBIs. He played in 401 games in his three years with the Marlins and he was 441 of 1,587 (.278 avg, .780 OPS) with 200 runs scored, 55 homers, 249 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Evan Reed could be on the fast track to Miami if he keeps pitching like he is in the minors this year. Reed has pitched in 31 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball so far this season and he is 2-1 with 5 saves, a 1.76 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. He has now pitched in 112 games (34 starts) in his four years in the minors and he is 14-14 with 31 saves, a 4.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Poveda was the Rangers’ #20 prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America but he will miss all of the 2010 season due to Tommy John Surgery. The Marlins are hoping that he will be ready for spring training. Poveda has pitched in 108 games (103 starts) in his five years in the minors and he is 33-36 with a 4.25 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. It will be interesting to see how this trade turns out as the Marlins will now have to use guys like Wes Helms, Emilio Bonifacio, Donnie Murphy and Hector Luna at 3B the rest of the way this year.

The Marlins have designated 26-year old righty reliever Kris Harvey for assignment to make room on the roster for Logan Morrison. Harvey came into this season as the Marlins’ #25 ranked prospect. He pitched in 15 games (0 starts) in A+AA-ball this year and he was 1-0 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. He pitched in 60 games (3 starts) in his three years in the minors as a pitcher and he was 8-9 with 1 save, a 4.63 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Harvey was an outfielder earlier in his career. He has played in 404 games in the minors for the Marlins and he was 300 of 1,259 (.238 avg, .688 OPS) with 156 runs scored, 42 homers, 171 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.

UPDATE: (7/30/2010) - The Marlins have outrighted Harvey to AA-ball after he cleared waivers.

The Florida Marlins will be without 25-year old lefty swinging starting LF Chris Coghlan for the next six to eight weeks as he tore his meniscus in his left knee. He hurt himself trying to nail Wes Helms with a pie in the face after a walkoff victory. What a dumb way to hurt yourself and your team. Coghlan has played in 91 games for the Marlins this year and he is 96 of 358 (.268 avg, .718 OPS) with 60 runs scored, 5 homers, 28 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The Marlins have recalled 22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Logan Morrison to replace Coghlan as the starting LF. Morrison was the Marlins’ #2 rated prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. Marlins’ fans have been clamoring for his recall and now we will get to see what he can do. Morrison has played in 73 games in A+AAA-ball this season and he is 81 of 259 (.313 avg, .925 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 6 homers and 47 RBIs. Morrison has now played in 462 games in his five years in the minors and he is 483 of 1,652 (.292 avg, .849 OPS) with 245 runs scored, 53 homers, 274 RBIs and 22 stolen bases.
