I don’t see Rivera staying in the minors too long as the Marlins need help behind the plate right now.

He has played in 196 games in his three years with the Marlins and he is 177 of 648 (.273 avg, .763 OPS) with 98 runs scored, 14 homers and 88 RBIs. The Marlins are going to likely have to find two new catchers for the 2011 season as Baker is going to likely miss the whole year and Ronny Paulino is going to miss a while as he will continue to serve his suspension for cheating (using PEDs).

27-year old righty starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco tried to pitch through pain but in the end he will have right knee surgery next week as his year is over. Nolasco started 26 games for the Marlins last year and he was 14-9 with a 4.51 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. He has now pitched in 131 games (115 starts) in his five years with the Marlins and he is 54-39 with a 4.45 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. The Marlins were working on a long term extension with Nolasco before he was injured. The Marlins will likely wait to offer it to him again until they see he is healthy. Nolasco is #2 in Marlins’ history now in wins (54) and he is #3 in strikeouts (638).

The Marlins will be without 26-year old righty swinging catcher Brett Hayes for the next 2-4 weeks with a Grade #1 separated shoulder. Hayes has played in 26 games for the Marlins this year and he is 16 of 77 (.208 avg, .655 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 2 homers, 6 RBIs and a amazing 26 whiffs. 27-year old righty swinging Brad Davis will likely take over as the starting catcher for the Marlins for the time being. Davis has played in 7 games for the Fish so far this year and he is 5 of 20 (.250 avg, .683 OPS) with 1 run scored and 3 RBIs. The Marlins have called up 25-year old switch hitting catcher Chris Hatcher to back up Davis. Hatcher played in 101 games in AA+AAA-ball this year and he was 62 of 315 (.197 avg, .556 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 5 homers, 36 RBIs and 111 whiffs. Hatcher has now played in 359 games in his five years in the minors and he is 247 of 1,174 (.210 avg, .655 OPS) with 169 runs scored, 36 homers, 160 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. I don’t see Hatcher getting much P.T. unless Davis gets hurt.

Uggla has played in 129 games for the Marlins this year and he is 136 of 476 (.286 avg, .883 OPS) with 86 runs scored, 29 homers, 83 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Marlins are in negotiations to sign Uggla to a long term deal and that would be a smart move. Uggla has played in 746 games in his five years with the Marlins and he is 738 of 2,814 (.262 avg, .836 OPS) with 485 runs scored, 150 homers, 443 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Uggla is already the Marlins’ all-time leader in homers with 150. He is also #6 in games (746), #8 in hits (738), #3 in runs scored (485), #4 in RBIs (443), #7 in doubles (161) and #6 in walks (349) in Marlins’ history. He deserves to be part of the core of the Florida Marlins when they move into their brand new stadium in 2012.

The Marlins have called up Cameron Maybin to replace Ross in CF. This was a bad move for the Marlins who only get salary relief for losing Ross. They could have got something for him at the trade deadline.

27-year old righty Ricky Nolasco has a torn meniscus in his right knee which could end his 2010 season. He has started 25 games for the Marlins this year and he is 14-8 with a 4.22 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Nolasco has only walked 30 batters this year in 155 2/3 innings while whiffing 147 batters as he has been very solid for the Marlins in 2010. 25-year old lefty Andrew Miller looks like Nolasco’s likely replacement. He made his 2010 debut for the Marlins recently and he looked good working 5 innings in which he allowed 3 hits and 1 earned run earning a no decision. He also walked and whiffed 3 batters in his first game for the Fish this year. But, Miller has not pitched too well in the minors this year. He has started 21 games in A+AA-ball this year and he was 2-9 with a 5.35 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP. His biggest issue in the minors was his control as he walked 76 batters in only 101 innings in the minors in 2010.

29-year old starting catcher Ronny Paulino has been suspended for 50 games by major league baseball for using PEDs. Paulino’s season is over and he will miss the start of the 2011. Paulino played in 91 games for the Marlins this year and he was 82 of 316 (.259 avg, .665 OPS) with 31 runs scored, 4 homers and 37 RBIs. Brad Davis has been recalled from AAA and he will share P.T. with Brett Hayes until John Baker returns next week. Davis played in 3 games earlier this year for the Marlins and he was 2 for 9 (.222 avg, .861 OPS) with 1 run scored, 1 RBI and 4 whiffs. Brett Hayes has played in 18 games for the Marlins now and he is 11 of 48 (.229 avg, .663 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer, 2 RBIs and 16 whiffs. So the Marlins won’t have much offense out of the catchers until Baker returns to action. Baker has played in 23 games this season for the Fish and he is 17 of 78 (.218 avg, .589 OPS) with 7 runs scored and 6 RBIs.
